The countdown has come to 140 days…London 2012 features about 26 sports that split into 39 disciplines. With the medal hopefuls dedicated at practice and competition severe this time, 2012 Olympics is the most anticipated events to be held ever in the UK. With more professionalism, spirit of sports and standard of competitors and events, 2012 is going to be a fantastic spectacle. Some events are expected to be more sensational.

Athletics

Athletics is one sport that clearly brings to action the fastest and fittest people to the competition. Competitors just run or jump in different ways and expose their physicality in track and field. It’s great to watch the performance from all athletes and the medal hopefuls who put increased effort of different levels. In athletics, the 100 metre sprint is anticipated much with the presence of Usain Bolt who is expected to set some new records beating his own record. He does something new each time and the 2012 Olympics is a big stage for him to do so once again.

Cycling

Cycling is unique when it comes to competitions. The style of the event and the competitive nature is totally different. It’s thrilling to watch the finish line. And, when you have cyclists cycling in opposite directions your eyes keep moving in both the directions. As the cyclists get closer to the finish line, the excitement is high. The host Nation, Great Britain is in good form in cycling and has proven to be the best in the past.

Swimming

Swimming is purely a competition among the fittest people. Swimmers have to put their efforts to propel them through the water. It looks very exciting as neither the competitors nor the people who watch it can guess who will finish first. In different formats, swimmers have to use the right strategy and hold their nerve to carry on the same effort right from the beginning. Anyone can win the event and it is all about focus on the technique and pulling out your maximum effort at a uniform pace.

Marathon

The Marathon is a true test of the strength and stamina of competitors. Being the longest race, sports fans can spend hours watching the event and enjoy a ride throughout the city. You can enjoy sports and at the same time explore more on your route by following the participants. It would be interesting to see the finishing lines as the participants with the best stamina reach the finishing points fast.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics is a breath taking event to watch. Gymnasts’ moves and various positions they pull off can leave the audience speechless. There are not much competitors when it comes gymnastics, only some competitors are really capable of getting into the event.

Wait for the action!

England is well known for its sporting traditions. When you say Cricket, the first thing that comes to mind is definitely England. Cricket is world’s third largest and most viewed sporting event and it’s an honour that England is the founder behind all forms of crickets including test matches, one day internationals and the various T20 matches played all over the world. Documentaries and predictions say cricket originated from different games like Kreckett, Stoolball, baseball and some other ball games. Some say 13th, some 15th, while others say it has grown from the 15th century and was successful as a complete game only in the eighteenth century.

England being the home to Cricket plays its part in different cricket tournaments played all over the world.

International Cricket

England, the Mother of Cricket, takes part in different international matches and tournaments. When it comes to international cricket, the most important competitions include

Cricket World Cup

The Cricket World Cup is organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for every four years since 1975. England has hosted the Cricket World Cup 4 times since 1975 in the years 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1999 and is the host for 2019 Cricket World Cup as well. England was the only nation in the early years of Cricket with resources for hosting big games. England has played the finals 3 times, but wasn’t able to win any.

ICC Championship Trophy

ICC Championship Trophy commonly called Championship Trophy was inaugurated in 1998 and is held every 2 years. It follows the same format as the Cricket World Cup. It’s a knock out tournament where a single loss could eliminate the team from the rest of the tournament. All test playing nations take part in the ICC Championship Trophy. England has hosted the trophy once in 2004 and became the runners up for the year. The last tournament was held in 2009 and the format is expected to change as World Test Championship from 2013.

It is fight between the countries for years to gain world supremacy in the game of cricket. The whole world anticipates this event as new records are set each time by the players.

Cricket in the UK

Twenty 20

Twenty 20 was introduced in England in 2003 to limit the match to 3 hours of play with 20 overs for each team. The initial matches were between the British Counties. The popularity of the game spread worldwide and the World T20 championship tournament was inaugurated in South Africa in 2007.

County Championship

The County Championship takes place in the UK since 1890. It’s UK’s domestic championship tournament and attracts the local crowd. The game is interesting and follows the same rules as international cricket and takes place in two divisions.

Campers are offered all facilities, but if they wish to stay overnight for tickets additional arrangements are not made. The queuing is in progress only till the quarter finals.

But, the London Marathon is an extra special annual event for it is to raise money for charity. Along with New York, Boston, Chicago, and Berlin, London Marathon is part of the World Marathon Majors.

Chris Basher and John Disney, participants of America’s Grand City Marathons 1979 were inspired with the event and had the idea that London should host an event like this. London Marathon was first launched on Sunday, 29 March, 1981. The run covers a distance of 26 miles and 385 yards. In the first year, 20,000 applications were received and 6,747 were accepted. 6,255 participants finished the race successfully.Read more »
